Daniel Feck, Mitsubishi 6G72 powered Lancer

Post by feck »

Name: Daniel Feck
Vehicle: 1990 Mitsubishi Lancer 4wd Wagon
Engine: 3.0L V6 from a Mitsubishi V3000 (6G72)
Injection: Original V3000 MPI controlled by MS v2.2 with MSnS 021u3 firmware.
Description: Started life as an 1800cc Diesel. It goes a bit quicker now. It weighs in at a bit over 1000kgs so has a reasonable weight advantage over late model 4wd rally cars. This project is shaping up to be a test of $/placing. The single most expensive (non-safety) cost has been the MS kit. In total the car has cost less than $3k and has already beaten cars over $30k. Nearly time to install a turbo and aim a bit higher!

MS made the original computer seem backward. The car now has good throttle response (almost like a lighter flywheel has been fitted) and can rev out well past the old rev limit.

The turbo has now been fitted and fired up. With a bit of fiddling plucking numbers out of thin air for safe-ish spark and fuel maps we took it for a first drive. At 6psi boost it has at least 50% more power already (verified by working out the average rpm/sec in 3rd gear before and after). This should have brought it from the ~160hp standard to ~240hp or more. The spark is breaking down at high revs so we will put in a new set of plugs before aiming higher with the boost. I'm pretty confident it will 4 wheel power slide in 3rd on gravel now. :D

Unfortunate premature failure. Too much advance + an old engine + too much boost isn't a good combination. Guess thats just what happens when playing with worn out gear, but at least it won't cost too much to replace. :D

This car has received a rebuilt engine, and has successfully completed a few rallysprints and club gravel events now. Tuning is a bit less aggressive than before with only 3psi boost - but that will change!
