Dan Arseneault, 1997 Ford Escort

Post by danman »

Name: Dan Arseneault
Vehicle: 1997 Ford Escort LX (4-door)
Engine: 2.0L, SOHC 4-cyl
Injection: Port injection, 19lb/hour injectors
Description: This install went very easily. I used all the factory parts and wiring by stripping the connector from a junked PCM and making up a harness to connect to MS and an EDIS4 module. The car is setup with EDIS4 from the factory but the module itself is built into the main PCM so I got an external one from a junkyard.

In order to convert between my original PCM and Megasquirt control, I only need to unplug the PCM, plug in my MS/EDIS harness, unplug the FPR vacuum hose from the manifold and replace it with the MAP sensor hose from Megasquirt. This provides a steady fuel pressure, and a nearly factory-like install. No modifications were done to the car itself!

MS is loaded with 021u3 code, for now set on 2-squirts simultaneous. I used the FIDLE output to control spark timing.

Once I sorted out the PWM time threshold, the engine started on the first try, ran pretty rough but what can you expect in 20F temps on untuned basemaps/guesswork. After 1/2 hour on the road tuning, driveability is almost the same as stock.

Here's the connections that I made notes of:

SAW - MS30 to EDIS3
TACH PIP - MS24 to EDIS1 *connect FORD48 for dash tach
crank pos. - FORD21 to EDIS6
crank neg. - FORD22 to EDIS5
coil A - FORD26 to EDIS10
coil B - FORD52 to EDIS12
Vpwr - FORD71 to EDIS8
IAT - FORD39 to MS20
CLT - FORD38 to MS21
TPS signal - FORD89 to MS22
o2 signal - FORD60 to MS23
INJ1 - FORD75 to MS32
INJ1 - FORD100 to MS33
INJ2 - FORD101 to MS34
INJ2 - FORD74 to MS35
Fuel Pump - FORD80 to MS37
12vpower - FORD 97 to MS28
5vref (TPS) - FORD90 to MS26

Grounded:
EDIS9
FORD91 and MS19 *sensor ref. ground
MS7,8,9,10,11
ground connections can be made through FORD24,33,51,77,103 or attached to car body

Wired this way, I'm using the FIDLE output as Spark Out (SAW). The throttle body actually did need to have the stop screw drilled out and a bolt with jam-nut installed to allow enough air for idle. IMRC (secondary intake ports, stock opened at 3300rpm) is not yet wired in, therefore there is very little power past 4500rpm for now. Rad fan is not wired in, it's still relatively cool here and most of my driving is done at highway speeds so I wasn't concerned with the fan for at least a few more weeks, but it must have a default ON safetyscheme because whenever the key is on, the fan is running. All the EDIS connections were to a seperate unit that I pulled from a junkyard off a 91-95 Escort. 96+ have it built into the PCM.

I'm thinking my injectors MIGHT be 15lb/hr, because my whole VE table seems higher than I though it should be. There's some other things to check as well, like fuel pressure since I have no idea what condition my 130,000mile original pump is in.
