84 Scirocco 1.8 8v JH with more than 21,000 miles so far

Post by timbo2132 »

Name: Tim McConnell
Vehicle: Early 1984 Scirocco
Engine: 8v JH code 1.8L engine. Normally runs CIS-Jetronic Mechanical fuel injection. Has a Catalytic converter, and is 90BHP from the factory. It's a low compression engine from the factory - only 8.3:1.
Injection: Port injection, 19lb Bosch injectors, VW FPR, Digifant VW Fox Manifold, Digifant Fuel rail from 1990 Jetta GL
Description: Daily Driven, and roadtrips
Website: http://www.vwctech.com/

The car had 205,xxx miles on it when I installed Megasquirt.

I built my Megasquirt ECU in March 2006 and installed it in May 2006.

The ECU was Megasquirt I CPU on the V3 PCB. No relay board, everything was directly connected.
At that time I was running a Passat Throttle body with the TPS, the IAT JBwelded to the intake tube, and the GM CLT JBwelded into a copper T cut into the upper radiator hose. I also kept my stock narrowband oxygen sensor. I set the req fuel for my Digifant injectors, and off I went with NO tuning at all - running the default map. My first long-distance drive was from Philly to Baltimore and I got 44mpg - when my usual was 30mpg.

The TPS throttle body. I set it up with this welded piece to use it with the stock throttle cable.

At this point, I retained the stock VW/Bosch ignition with vacuum and mechanical advance. The new throttle body did not have a ported vacuum connection, so I just put the vacuum advance on manifold facuum.

Drove the car from Philly to Cincinnati, no problems. Drove it from Philly to Denver during the winter. The location of the CLT caused me to get bad milage when it was cold outside. (It went down to 22mpg) After I returned, I relocated the CLT sensor to a drilled-out Coolant housing on the head that was inline with both the radiator's upper hose and the bypass hose.

Drove the car to H2oInternational, and Dynoed it with the stock ignition. 83.5 HP! :D

A new dual downpipe was installed in September 2006.

In April 2007, I got a Wideband Oxygen sensor - the LC-1, and started playing with tuning it. Suprisingly, the Default map was not too far off!

Just after thism I re-flashed my CPU with Megasquirt n Spark code, and changed my distributor over to a locked one from a Digifant Fox engine. I used a stock map I found on the internet.

The wideband allowed me to make a very accurate fuel map for the car.

A few months ago, I deleted my oil heat exchanger and changed to a plastic coolant outlet housing that had clip-in style sensors. I got an adapter for the GM CLT sensor, and stuffed it in the bottom hole.

I re-wired the whole engine to clean it up a bit. I used Audi Connectors everywhere.

I attahed a fuse block and a terminal strip to the top of the ECU, and now it's much easier to replace wires.

At H2oInternational this year, I put it on the same dyno again.

This time, 87.3 HP! This is a combonation between better tuning, the new dual downpipe, and the ignition changes.

As of today, I have 227,3xx miles on the car.

EDIT: I drove the car from Philadelphia to Denver, CO and back last week. It's at 232,2xx miles now. No Megasquirt problems. It rand great. WORST MPG was 31.2 and best was 35.9. This was with two people and 400lbs of cargo.
