Daniel deVoigt, Hilux carbie 22R to EFI conversion

Post by devojet »

I converted a Hilux with a 22r to EFI using an injection manifold from a Toyota Corona. Basically I followed the write up on the DIYautotune.com web site.

MS2 V3 PCB
Locked distributer and driving coil directly from the MS
Standard Corona sensors and injectors. just added a GM IAT sensor.
Chopped up the Corona loom to make a MS loom.
Fuel pump is a VL Commodoore Bosch pump.

It has been running for 3 months now with no problems. The injection manifold gave a good increase in low to mid range torque. I would recomend this conversion to anyone with a carbie 22r powered hilux.

It's still running around fine with no problems. Has had the firmware updated a couple of times and added a PWM idle valve. Last time I touched it was over a year ago. The car belonged to a mate of mine but since got sold to his brother. Now I'm not quite sure who has it.

Let me know if you have any questions. I have done a few other MS installs as well.

Cheers

Daniel.

Wow I really didn't expect a response as this thread's so old.

I'll be running the PNP with an IAT sensor and a wide band o2. Everything else is stock.
Did you run into any problems starting up?

Thanks

This was actually the first MS install I did. It fired up strait away which was a surprise. Just used the VE calculator to get a base map and set the basic setting. We were then able to drive and tune it.

If your looking for somewhere to put the IAT sensor, I put where the cold start injector is. You don't need the cold start injector and the whole it leaves it the exact size to be taped to 1/2NPT. Then just use a 1/2NPT to 3/8NPT reducer to fit the IAT sensor.

Cheers

Great to hear it started up first go. I tried to EFI the hilux about 18 months ago and had some problems with the factory ecu so now I've gone megasquirt, hopefully mine will start up first go too.

Did you say you were running the coil off the ecu? How is that hooked up?
Also how did you hook up the idle valve. That's something I'd like to do to mine.

Thanks

Here is the info for the single coil output.

http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2 ... .htm#1coil

and here is some info about PWM idle valves.

http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms2extra/MS2 ... .htm#Fidle

The 22r already has a basic idle valve which is located under the throttle body. just replaced it with a PWM style idle valve off an rx7. You could also use one off an E series falcon or any other that can be modified to have hose tails.

I did some reading last night and maybe one day i'll set up the direct coil ignition. As for the PWM Idle valve did you mount it to the side of the inlet?

I cant believe how hard it is to get a 1/2-3/8 NPT fitting, ive had to order it from the USA. even getting the 1/2 NPT tap was a struggle.

Thanks

It's not that hard to do direct coil control. But starting out with fuel only is a good way to learn, then add ignition control later. Are you using the mechanical distributer or the EFI one? I assume you are using the mechanical one like we did.

If I remember corectly my mate just zip tied it to the side on the manifold with the 2 hoses running to the appropriate places.

I didn't realise that stuff was hard to get. I guess I was lucky I had the tap and fittings laying around in the shed.

Where are you located in Australia?

Im using the locked dizzy, but i have both, i actually have 2 of most things.

The tap wasn't hard to find just the reducer. I live in canberra so i didn't have too many places to look.

Thanks
