1993 BMW F650 EFI Conversion

Post by efi_bimmer »

The fuel system is ready, bought all parts needed for the conversion.
Waiting for MiniMS ecu mTech Automotive which is derived from MegaSquirt v2.0 (fuel only).
It has a small size for motrocycle and has a proper automotive connector.
No need for spark yet. For the time being I can rely on the OEM CDI.
My custom CDI is also ready and I can use it to trigger the ecu as well.
I will get it running before summer.

1993 BMW F650 EFI Conversion

I just finished the EFI conversion of my carburated BMW F650 '93 using MiniMS.
The conversion consists of

* DS650 intake manifold, bored out to 45mm, ported and polished.
* BMW F650GS 2002 45mm thottle body with 330cc/min injector.
* Onboard Bosch TPS, the range is not good (adc values 48-128) and flood clear mode is useless.
* Fuel Pump (120psi/36gph)
* Adjustable fuel pressure regulator, to be replaced with F650GS OEM part.
* System pressure @3.5bar (~50psi).
* BOSCH IAT and CLT sensors with new tables using Easytherm.

At the moment I got it starting, but no idling yet.
I am having some problems with MAP sensor, probably the fast idle stepper position leaks some air to the manifold,
so the MAP reports atmospheric pressure (100kpa) all the time but I have no means to control it using MiniMS.
I need to find a way to seal it, since I will not use it.
For the time being it is just in a fully closed position (I thought).
Still looking for a K&N Air filter for the TB, something like a KTM640 Air filter kit.

I will keep you updated...

I finally got it working fine.
Used the Alpha-N approach, due to unstable MAP signal, even using a restriction on the map line.
The engine works sweet, the bottom-end torque is stronger and
the fuel consumption is even better than using the old stock carbs.
The HP has not been affected much though. I guess the stock camshafts are a bit lame.

Generally I am very pleased I got it working without too many problems.
In order to tune it without a dyno, I used MSTweak and countless hours of data logging.
Alpha-N is not very good for small throttle openings and took me ages to tune the area 0-15% of throttle.

I still need to play with Speed Density and try the Denso 12-hole injector, used on Yamaha XT660 or Raptor 700.
I have the feeling this injector is much better than the 4-hole Bosch I am using at the moment.
Still need to pay a visit to a Dyno with Load control, to finalize tuning.

Here is the link to a page with photos and a video of the conversion.
