The internal wastegate I had on my turbo wasn't opening as early as hoped. This fact, combined with my inability to do KPA to PSI in my head meant that I ate a composite head gasket. I was leaking water into the #3 and #4 cylinder when the truck was off and leaking combuston gases into the radiator when running.
I replace it with a Cometic MLS gasket. Two things to remember:
1) You have to have a block machined fine enough for MLS. R50 or better.
2) MLS gaskets can be reused! No more replacing HGs if you need to swap cams.
I added a TIAL WG. Set to 6psi.
After a few engine mechanical failures (not my fault) - I'm up and on the road. I start building boost around 2k and I'm at 6psi by 2500 or so.
I suspect my turbo is a bit large for my application - it's a t3/t04b.
I'm playing with timing.. Which is a bit of a pain.
Fuel is pretty easy with the help of megalogviewer and a wideband.

Ignition setup is toyota "VAST" - IE stock ignition. See the MS documentation on how to deal with this system. It's fixed distributor.celicaxx wrote:what is your ignition setup? dizzy or cps? also, what are you doing for vr conditioning?

I just finished tuning another truck - this time a factory 22RTE truck. T3/T4, MSnSE, same ignition system (VAST) with a MSD-6 unit.
It's owned by Harry Wagner:

why not ignition control as well so you can boost-retard the timing? you could pump some more boost in without increasing risk of detonation.
I've used the VR sensor out of 22RE in a locked dizzi in my 18R turbo, fed it thru the LM1815 VR circuit and driven a Camry coil with a VB921 - works quite well once you get the air gap right.
Also? why no intercooler? no space or not needed?
cheers,
Charles
