Name: Carl E Sorman

The motive to choose MegaSquirt: Serious problems to tune the engine with “For Race Use Only ECU” and Power Commander. Knocks with warm engine and limited top rpm (6800).

Vehicle: Buell X 1 Lightning -01.

Model: Street Legal Dragbike. Strip set-up with velocity stack and Force 2 to 1 megaphone.

Engine: 1245 cc (76 CI). 2-cyl. Four stroke. Air cooled. V-twin Sportster, Millennium cylinders, Thunderstorm heads, Comp 13.2:1. Jim’s roller rockers and solid lifters. Red Shift cams.

Dyno figures: Power: 111.7 hp @ 7300 rpm. Torque: 118 Nm @ 5200 rpm.

Strip figures: ET 11.251 / 120.369 mph

MS settings: Alpha-N, 1 Squirt, Simultaneous, Four stroke, Cyl 2, TB, 2 Injectors, 250 kPa, Odd Fire.

Parts: Most injection parts are Buell stock items. New Bosch injectors and head temp sensor.

Ignition: Crane HI-4 single fire ignition. High performance coils and iridium plugs.

Behavior: Start up easily. Smooth and study idling. Nice throttle response. Engine running fine.

Miscellaneous: Have experience from using RB-Racing and Autronic injection systems on other bikes and must say that MS is fun to build and easy to install and tune.

Special thanks: To Eric Fahlgren for very quick answers on my trivial e-mail questions. Thanks to Roger Enns for EasyTherm and also thanks to Bruce & Al and all guys that made it possible to build a real good injection system for a few bucks.

Carl,

Sweet ride!

No problems tuning the single intake into odd firing cylinders? I'd expect some charge robbing to be going on, have you looked at the plugs to see if one cylinder is leaner than the other?

Hi Eric

I started the tuning with these constants:

Alpha-N, 2 Squirts, Altering, Four stroke, Cyl 2, TB, 2 Injectors, 250 kPa, Odd Fire.

The engine was difficult to tune, run badly and the front cylinder run much leaner than the rear cylinder. Speed 107 mph indicated that something was very wrong with the engine. :(

Changed to these constants:

Alpha-N, 1 Squirt, Simultaneous, Four stroke, Cyl 2, TB, 2 Injectors, 250 kPa, Odd Fire.

Both cylinders burn OK. Speed 120 mph says that the engine run well. :D

Regards
Carl
